Overview

The Custom Tests feature on Marty allows you to create tailored assessments aligned with your specific hiring needs. Whether testing general skills or job-specific knowledge, you can build fully customized tests by first configuring your questions in the Question Bank, then organizing them into Topics within a test.

This guide will walk you through:

  • How to create questions in the Question Bank

  • How to access the Custom Test builder

  • How to organize questions into topics

  • How to finalize and use your test with candidates

Step 1: Create Questions in the Question Bank

Before building a test, you need to add your questions in the Question Bank.

  1. Navigate to Settings > Question bank

  2. Click Create new question

  3. Fill in the following fields:

    • Question title (for internal use)

    • Question type: Choose between Single choice, Multiple choice, Video interview, or Open text

    • Question duration

    • Question text (this is what candidates will see)

    • Add answer options if applicable, and mark the correct one(s)

  4. Click Save

Your questions will now be available for use when creating tests.

Step 2: Access the Custom Test Builder

  1. Navigate to Settings

  2. Under the Assessments section, select Custom tests

This will take you to the test creation interface.

Step 3: Create a New Test and Add Topics

When creating a new test, you will first complete the basics step:

  1. Click Create new test and enter your Test name.

  2. Choose the Type of test:

    • Custom Test – a structured test composed of topics and questions

    • Video – a test format based on candidate-recorded video responses

  3. Select a Level (e.g., Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) to help categorize difficulty

  4. Choose the Language for the test. Only questions in that language will be available later.

  5. Click Continue to proceed to the Topics tab.

In the Topics tab:

  • Click Add topic to create a section within the test (e.g., Problem Solving, Communication)

  • You can rename each topic to reflect the content

You may create one or more topics depending on your test structure.

Step 4: Add Questions from the Question Bank

  1. Within each topic, click Add question

  2. Select questions from your Question Bank

  3. Repeat for each topic as needed

You can’t create questions directly in the test—only questions from the bank can be added here.

Step 5: Configure and Finalize the Test

After organizing all questions into topics:

  1. Click Continue to open the Configuration step

  2. Fill in the test metadata:

    • Toggle Shuffle questions if desired

    • Provide a short description of the test's purpose

    • Specify which roles the test is relevant for

    • List covered skills for tagging/search

  3. Click Finish to create and save your test

Your test will now appear in your test library.
